They couldn’t keep me quiet for long.
The Fritz File is back after a six-month hiatus. Plenty has happened this off-season for me individually, from travelling to Asia, to coordinating the School is Cool basketball program, to getting into football shape again.
But we’ll get into all that later in the season. For now, it’s all about training camp.
We have been at training camp here at St. Jean for over a week and there have been plenty of interesting things going on. There were quite a few new faces, and also some from my past. I knew that one of my old university buddy, defensive tackle Dario Romero, would be here, but I got a pleasant surprise when another Eastern Washington University alumnus walked into our team meeting, defensive back and kick returner Lamont Brightful.
When practices first began, the defence definitely had the upper hand. Slowly, but surely, however, our offence has gained on them. And with each practice there has been continual improvement on both sides of the ball. I feel that one player that has been especially solid has been former Ottawa Renegade Jerome Haywood. In past years, we’d be thinking about how to defend against him around this time of year because we were about to play against him, but now because of the dismantling of Ottawa, he is fighting for the good guys.
The highlight of camp so far was the rookie show. Anwar Stewart and Thyron Anderson were great MCs and the people that were picked on the most were either one of our new coaches, Brad Miller, or second-year wide receiver Shaun Diner. The skit that got the most laughs was the group of rookie linemen in a pie eating contest.
The team is starting to find its identity and we will have our first real test in Winnipeg on Friday. This will be a new experience for me because the only team I have had a pre-season game against was Ottawa. What the future holds we can only find out, but I can guarantee one thing: it’s going to be fun to watch.
