Montreal – Concordia football coach Gerry McGrath has announced that former Montreal Alouette star Sylvain Girard has returned to the Concordia Stingers as an ambassador for the football program.
Effective immediately, Girard will assist McGrath and the Stingers with alumni development, recruiting and community outreach.
“Having a quality individual like Sylvain involved with the program is exciting,” said McGrath. “Having his named attached to our initiatives will be a big help with our recruiting and public relations. His football expertise will also be a welcome addition.”
Girard played four seasons (1995-98) as wide receiver with the Stingers. During that time he broke two Ontario-Quebec Interuniversity Football Conference records – for most TDs (five) and points (30) scored in a single game. He also set the Stinger record for most touchdowns in a season with 10. Girard also holds the Stinger record for most career TDs with 23.
Girard was the Montreal Alouettes’ first round selection (5th overall) in the 1999 CFL Canadian Draft, and was the top Canadian college player taken that year. He signed as a free agent with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and attended their training camp before joining the Alouettes midway through the season.
With Montreal, Girard caught 122 passes for 1,975 yards with 10 touchdowns in 103 CFL games. He played in four Grey Cup games, winning in 2002.
The Chicoutimi native completed a degree in exercise science at Concordia before embarking on his professional football career.
