Montreal – Even with the run on offensive lineman in the first round of the CFL Canadian Draft, the Montreal Alouettes decided to turn the tables and bolster their defence by adding linebacker Shea Emry with the seventh overall pick.
The 21-year-old linebacker from the University of British Columbia comes to the Alouettes touted as one of the most athletic players in this year’s draft.
Despite his towering 6’1”, 235-pound frame, in seven games with the UBC Thunderbirds in 2007, Emry led the team with 57 tackles, including six for combined losses of 18 yards.
Moreover, he added one forced fumble and one knockdown. Roaming the middle of the secondary, Emry led the Thunderbirds in tackles on two occasions during the 2007 season when he notched 12 in games against Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Although a Richmond, B.C., native, Emry began his collegiate football career in 2004 playing NCAA Division 1 football for the Eastern Washington Eagles.
Honing his talent over the course of his three seasons, he earned All-Big Sky Conference honours in 2005 for his work on special teams, while in his final season before transferring to UBC, he played in 11 games, finishing fourth on the team in tackles.
