Official release, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, June 1, 2008 – The following is the daily report for the training camp opening:
Over 1,500 fans on the campus
Over 1,500 fans were at the exciting opening day of training camp, presented by CN, at the Campus du Fort-Saint-Jean today. The 2008 edition of the Montreal Alouettes was presented to the crowd, with large ovations reserved for big names like Ben Cahoon, Anthony Calvillo, Jim Popp and new coach Marc Trestman.
Trestman’s debut, return for Calvillo
The Alouettes practiced indoors at the Stade Haut-Richelieu for weather reasons with Trestman making his practice debut and Calvillo in pads for the first time since last October. Following the morning’s activities, the players hit the field for a second go-round at 3:30 p.m.
McPherson having fun
Every year some rookies catch people’s attention, and this year is no exceptions. Quarterback Adrian McPherson, who starred at Florida State University, was the first one to make some noise this year as he completed several tough passes in practice today.
Richardson in the spotlight!
Wide receiver Jamel Richardson did well in his first test with his new team today, catching a nice pass from Calvillo.
Ferri back in action
Linebacker Diamond Ferri was back on the field today, having received clearance from doctors.
Three new players
Three players were added to the roster: Offensive lineman Adam O’Connor (William & Mary), cornerback Riley Swanson (Wake Forest) and wide receiver Keron Williams (Massachusetts).
Three guest coaches
The Alouettes have three guest coaches at training camp this year: former Montreal defensive back Tony Proudfoot, former running back Avery Wendell and former CFL receiver Travis Moore.
Tomorrow’ schedule
With bad weather a probability, the team will train at the Stade Haut-Richelieu at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
