Five Questions with Bryan Chiu
With the Alouettes’ 2008 training camp getting underway, I had the chance to catch up with the leader of the Als’ offensive line, Bryan Chiu. A fan favourite and perennial All-Canadian for over a decade, there’s just no better source for a little perspective on what’s shaking as the team gets to work in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
So49: As a veteran, how have your expectations of training camp changed over the years?
Chiu: This is my 12th training camp in the CFL, and it definitely does not get any easier. Every year I feel that I need to prove myself again and “earn” the trust of the coaches. In my first few camps, I never knew where I fit in on the team, or if they even wanted me. As I get older now, the biggest challenge for me is to keep my body in one piece.
I may not be as strong or fast as I used to be, but I have experience and I will put myself in the right position and limit any mental mistakes.
So49: What is your top priority heading to St-Jean this summer?
Chiu: My top priority this training camp would be to re-focus myself and to make an honest effort to get better. Another challenge will be to learn the new offensive system and to play confidently.
So49: Coach Trestman has mentioned the need to protect the passer better than last season. As the leader of the offensive line, how do you feel the unit will accomplish this goal in the upcoming season?
Chiu: For whatever reason, it is quite obvious that we struggled last year. As a veteran group, we all take pride in doing our jobs and protecting Anthony Calvillo.
We understand that if AC has time, he will tear teams apart. I feel that we have a tremendous group and we just need to stick together and trust in each other.
So49: What are your personal goals for the season, and how does camp help you achieve those goals?
Chiu: My personal goal is to reach my 200th game as an Alouette, and most importantly, end my career holding the Grey Cup at Olympic Stadium on Nov. 23. The best way to achieve these goals would be to keep my body in good shape and get better everyday.
