Montreal – Québécoise rock singer Anik Jean performed at halftime tonight at Percival Molson Stadium, part of a series of high-profile acts that will be featured throughout this season. She rocked out on the 50-yard line in front of a crowd of lucky fans that got to go down on the field to see her up close.
“It was the first time I played in a football stadium, and with this crowd, out under the open sky – it was really special,” Jean said.
Jean released an album this year entitled “Le ciel saigne le martyre,” on which she collaborated with producer Mark Plati, who has worked with none other David Bowie. Her previous album, “Le Trashy Saloon”, released in 2005, was very well liked and led her to open for the Rolling Stones in January 2006. She not only sings, but composes and writes her songs as well.
It was also the first time she has ever attended an Alouettes game.
“It was awesome,” she said. “The band and I got to sit on the side during the first half and we kept saying how cool it was, there’s a great ambiance here.”
She performed wearing eye-black (the stripes football players wear under their eyes to minimize glare) for the occasion, as well as a huge, all-white Indian-style headdress that she made herself.
“I believe in the spirituality of it, how a leader of a tribe is marked by these beautiful headdresses, and as head of the band, I feel like it’s appropriate. I always wear it when I perform.”
Looks like football players aren’t the only ones with superstitions!
Anik Jean will perform at Club Soda on Sept. 24.
The Alouettes next host the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Percival Molson Stadium (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD, 98,5 FM).
