By Richard Obrand Montreal – Hamilton quarterback Quinton Porter has nothing to be thankful for this time. Porter, the same rookie pivot who threw five touchdown passes in a 44-38 win last week against the Alouettes at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium, was sacked and intercepted twice. In fact, he totalled just 167 yards as the Alouettes answered back hard, beating the Tiger-Cats 42-11 in front of an 86th-straight sellout crowd at Montreal’s Percival Molson Stadium. Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo completed 33 of his 41 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns – before adding one on the ground – while receiver Jamel Richardson tied a team record with three touchdown receptions, amassing 125 yards in the process. Despite his performance, however, Calvillo stuck to the same mentality he has been using all season. “We still don’t know what kind of team we are. (Coach Marc Trestman) has been telling us about our 18-game journey and we’re almost finished it,” said Calvillo. Following a record-setting outing last week in Hamilton in which he became the CFL’s all-time Canadian receptions leader, slotback Ben Cahoon continued to make his mark in the team’s record books, tying the Alouette mark for most catches in a game with 13. As they have been doing all season long, the Alouettes scored early and often. Calvillo found Richardson just 4:58 into the first quarter for his first of three scores to put the Als up 7-0. Hamilton answered back on their ensuing possession with Porter leading the Tiger-Cats downfield, capping off the scoring drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven apiece. Following a missed field goal single by Damon Duval which put Montreal up by one, Calvillo and Richardson hooked up again, this time from 25-yards out to make the score 15-7. Hamilton kicker Nick Setta cut the lead to five with an eight-yard field goal, but Duval re-extended the lead back to eight, connecting from 23 yards out. Backup quarterback Adrian McPherson, who usually sees time in short yardage situations, made the most of his limited playing time by finding Richardson for his final major of the day from one yard out to put the Alouettes up by 15 heading into the half. Calvillo picked up where he left off in the first half, starting the second with a three yard touchdown run, then connected with Cahoon for the final score of the day. While the Alouettes had two 100-plus yards receivers in Richardson and Cahoon, also impressive was their running game with Dahrran Diedrick breaking the century mark on the ground for the first time in his career. In all, Diedrick took the ball 15 times for 127 yards, an impressive average of 8.5 yards-per-carry, while Kerry Carter added 51 yards on six carries. Add that to Calvillo and McPherson’s totals, and the Als had an impressive 196 yards and one major on the ground. The Alouettes next face the Argonauts at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. |
