By Richard Obrand, Montreal – Rumor has it that Alouettes receiver Jamel Richardson is building a condo in opposing team’s end zones. And why shouldn’t he? The 6-foot-3 receiver, who prior to this season amassed just 1,471 yards and scored just four touchdowns in four seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders has visited them 15 times this season – with no intention of slowing down. With two touchdowns and 52 yards on six receptions this Saturday, Richardson played an integral role in leading the Alouettes to a 43-34 matinee victory over the Argonauts at the Rogers Centre. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo threw four touchdowns for 336 yards, while kicker Damon Duval connected on four of his five field goal attempts to improve the Alouettes’ record to 11-5-0. Known for scoring early and often, the Alouettes were stalled on their opening drive as Calvillo threw his 12th interception of the season on his first pass attempt of the day. The Argos took advantage, as quarterback Kerry Joseph’s pass was tipped by Alouettes defensive back Chip Cox and into the hands of receiver Andre Talbot in the end zone to give Toronto a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, however, Calvillo was perfect. The 36-year old veteran orchestrated a 51-yard drive, completing all of his passes before finding receiver Kerry Watkins for his 10th major of the year. After Toronto kicker Mike Vanderjagt conceded a safety and Duval missed a field goal for a single to give the Als a 10-7 lead, Calvillo found Richardson for his 14th score of the year to extend Montreal’s lead to 10. The second quarter started off with two Duval field goals, followed by a Joseph touchdown pass to Arland Bruce III to cut the Als lead to six. Following a field goal by each team, Calvillo connected with Richardson for his league-leading 15th touchdown of the season. Down by 16 with just under a quarter to play, the Argos mounted a comeback with a four-yard Joseph touchdown run and a 91-yard bomb to receiver Reggie McNeal, but all hopes of a comeback were erased as Calvillo put the final touches on the afternoon with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brian Bratton to put the Als up for good. With the win, Montreal completed a season series sweep of the Argonauts, beating them three times for a combined score of 120-67. The Alouettes will next host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their final home game of the regular season, next Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. |
