Montreal – People should really stop telling Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman and his team what they should be doing.
First, they were supposed to lose, and lose often.
They didn’t.
Following a rather disappointing 2007 season that saw the Alouettes fall to their worst finish rejoining the CFL in 1996, the Als head into their final two weeks of the season with an 11-5-0 record and an East Division regular season title to go with it.
There have been whispers of failure regarding the Larks all year, however. A spiral into the post-season was all but inevitable according to some.
Wrong again.
Since their division-clinching loss to Hamilton in Week 15, the Alouettes have strung together two hard-fought victories, outscoring their opponents 85-45.
Their most recent triumph came Saturday afternoon in Toronto at the Rogers Centre.
Playing in front of the more than 600 Montreal fans who made the Fan Train trip to Hogtown, the Alouettes swept the season series between them and their divisional opponents – and in fine fashion.
Quarterback Anthony Calvillo threw four touchdowns for 336 yards, while receiver Jamel Richardson’s onslaught on the end zone continued, as he scored his league-leading 14th and 15th touchdowns of the season.
For Winnipeg (6-10-0), despite being picked apart by Calgary quarterback Henry Burris and his five touchdown passes in a 37-16 loss, the Blue Bombers still managed to walk away with a second place finish in the East Division.
Kevin Glenn was relieved by Ryan Dinwiddie in the second half as both failed to eclipse the century mark in passing yards.
Dinwiddie threw the Bombers’ lone touchdown pass, while kicker Alexis Serna provided the rest of the Bombers offence with three field goals.
With a win this week, the Alouettes can complete their second series sweep against a divisional opponent this season.
In their two matchups s far, the Alouettes have outscored the Bombers 77-30.
The Alouettes will host the Blue Bombers this Sunday, Oct. 26 in their final regular-season home game of the year. (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD, 98,5 FM).
