Montreal, Nov. 18, 2008 – The Canadian Football League announced today that Montreal Alouettes’ quarterback Anthony Calvillo and kick returner Larry Taylor have been named, respectively, Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week following the Alouettes’ 36-26 win over the Edmonton Eskimos last Saturday in the East Division Final.
Anthony Calvillo – Offensive Player of the Week
Calvillo completed 20 of his 32 passes for 295 yards and a touchdown on top of gaining 29 yards on three carries to earn the Offensive POW nod for a third time this season.
He has also been nominated for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award after passing for 5,633 yards and 43 touchdowns against just 13 interceptions in 17 games this year. His 472 completions and 43 touchdown passes this year are both team records.
Larry Taylor – Special Teams Player of the Week
Taylor returned six punts for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns, becoming the first player in CFL history to score on two punt returns in a playoff game. His 97-yard return was the third-longest in playoff history, and he also set a new record for most punt return yards in a game with 203, besting Johnny Rodgers’ 157 against Ottawa in 1975.
This is Taylor’s second special teams nod of the year. This season, the rookie returner gained 526 yards and scored one touchdown on 44 punt returns.
The Alouettes will host the Calgary Stampeders in the 96th Grey Cup this Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium (RDS HD, TSN HD, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD).
