Als sign a couple
With just four months remaining until training camp begins for the Alouettes at Fort St-Jean in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, general manager Jim Popp continues to assemble his roster.
Wednesday, Popp announced that linebacker and special teams player Walter Spencer will be returning to the Als for another year with an option of a second and that former Wake Forest stand out Jon Abbate will be joining the Alouettes under the same terms as Spencer.
Last season saw the five-year veteran, Spencer, finish second among the Als in special teams tackles with 17 a year after leading the league in the same category with 30.
Abbate comes to Montreal after an impressive collegiate career with the Demon Deacons, starting in 29 of 35 career games, recording 297 tackles, 17 for losses, six sacks, four interceptions and four knockdowns.
In 2006, he was named to the ACC first team, recording 120 tackles that season.
Lee impresses
Jamall Lee is record-breaking fast.
The Bishop’s University product ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, .02 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Jean-Frederick Tremblay of Laval in 2004.
“It’s been a lot of hard work and a lot of sacrifice and it just feels great to do well in front of such a big crowd at such an important time,” said Lee.
The record is just another addition to the already impressive resume that Lee has compiled over his years with the Gaiters.
Last season saw the Port Coquitlam, BC, native lead the country in rushing with 1,202 yards on 182 carries, break the century mark five times and rush for a dazzling 391 yards with four touchdowns against McGill last September.
With the CFL Canadian Draft just a couple of months away, Lee’s performance last weekend all but ensured him as a top selection.
Glenn’s gone
After a frustrating 2008 season, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released quarterback Kevin Glenn.
“I never caused any trouble on or off the field to give the Bombers a bad name. I had a great stay in Bomberland. They gave me the opportunity when they brought me in so I can never take that away,” Glenn said on TSN.ca.
Glenn’s status with the Bombers became uncertain following the acquisition of Stefan LeFors last month from Edmonton.
“I think it’s important in the Canadian Football League that you have a quarterback who can make plays with their feet,” head coach Mike Kelly said. “I wasn’t convinced that that particularly fit Kevin’s skill set.”
The 2007 East Division MOP, Glenn, threw 20 touchdowns last season for a total of 3,637. He also threw a league-high 20 interceptions.
