Brown joins the Als
For the second time this off-season, Alouettes general manager Jim Popp has dipped into the AFL.
Tuesday, Popp announced the signing of defensive back Jerald Brown to a one-year contract with an option year.
In February, the Als welcomed lineman Phil Bogle from the AFL, also signing a one-year deal with an option.
Brown spent five years in the AFL, playing with the New York Dragons, Arizona Rattlers, Kansas City Brigade and the Columbus Destroyers.
In 2006, he took home defensive player of the year honours with the Destroyers, racking up 11 interceptions and 133 interception-return yards.
He also attended training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Brown is expected at the Alouettes’ training camp on June 7.
Bombers, Ticats and Riders swap players and picks
The end result of a three-way trade that saw a flurry of assets dispersed between Hamilton, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan saw six players find new homes around Canada.
Thursday, the Tiger-Cats acquired offensive lineman Dan Goodspeed, and a fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft from the Roughriders in exchange for fellow offensive lineman Jordan Rempel and Hamilton’s second round pick in this years draft.
The Roughriders then acquired Winnipeg’s fifth round pick as well as their fifth pick in the 2010 or 2011 draft and the rights to running back Tyler Roehl for Adarius Bowman, non-import offensive lineman Jean Francois Morin-Roberge, non-import defensive back Brady Browne, a player from Saskatchewan’s negotiation list, the Roughriders’ sixth-round draft pick in the 2010 CFL Canadian draft and a fifth-round pick in 2012.
Miles stays in BC
One of the elite safety’s in the CFL is staying in BC.
Wednesday, the Lions announced that safety Barron Miles has signed a deal that will keep him with the team through the 2010 season.
“Barron has been a leader in the truest sense of the word for our club and I am very pleased to announce this extension today,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.
Last season saw Miles start all 18 games for the Lions, leading the league with nine interceptions in the process.
“I am excited about the 2009 season and the team we are going put on the field,” said Miles. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to get us back to a Grey Cup game and bring home a championship for our fans.”
