Weir immortalized
Glen Weir, one the Alouettes’ all-time great defensive tackles has been summoned to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
Tuesday, the Hall announced that Weir, along with linebacker Alondra Johnson, linemen Jim Mills and Rudy Phillips and former Calgary Stampeder executive Tony Anselmo will be inducted this season.
Induction weekend will take place in Winnipeg from Sept. 24-26 as the Toronto Argonauts take on the Blue Bombers at Canada Inns Stadium on Sept. 25.
Playing 203 career games over 13 seasons, Weir – one of Montreal’s most resilient players – said he was humbled about being named to the Class of 2009.
“It’s a great honour to be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, and I have to say it was completely unexpected,” said Weir. “I have two Grey Cup rings but three daughters, so now everybody will have a ring!”
Chosen as the East Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive player in 1977, Weir was also a six-time East Division All-Star and was also selected to three CFL All-Star teams.
He also took home Most Outstanding Defensive player honours when the Als defeated the Edmonton Eskimos in the 1977 Grey Cup in Montreal, forever remembered as the “Staple Game”.
Staying in BC
The BC Lions have resigned a valuable piece of their offensive line.
Tuesday, the Lions announced that Sherko Haji-Rasouli will remain with the club for another three seasons.
The deal is reportedly worth $140,000 per season.
“Sherko has been strong performer and I expect big things from him moving forward,” said Lion GM and head coach Wally Buono. “In addition to making an impact on the field with his play, I also anticipate his emergence as a leader in the room.”
Last season saw the the native of Shiraz, Iran and 2002 Alouette draftee play in 15 games for the Lions.
He is 28.
Hamilton signs a pair
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have boosted their defensive corps.
Wednesday, the Tiger-Cats announced the signings of imports, linebacker Tim Goodwell and defensive lineman Alex Morrow.
Morrow joins Hamilton after attending training camp with the New York Giants in 2008.
As a senior at USC, Morrow played in all of the Trojans’ 13 games, recording two sacks and five tackles.
Goodwell arrives in Hamilton with some CFL experience, having played five regular-season and one playoff game with the Lions in 2007.
