Proudfoot in St-Jean
For the second straight season, head coach Marc Trestman has named former Alouettes defensive back and radio commentator, Tony Proudfoot a guest coach for June’s training camp and perhaps beyond.
Proudfoot heads into the 2009 CFL campaign in year three of his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
While Proudfoot’s speech and communication capabilities may be diminishing, it’s his continuous passion and extensive knowledge of the game that brought on the call of Trestman.
“He knows the league and understands the rules,” Trestman told the Gazette. “He’s a brilliant man with playing experience. It will be unbelievable to have him here, in a coaching capacity and bounce ideas off him.”
Proudfoot could not be happier with the offer.
“I want to thank Marc for providing me with this opportunity,” he said.
Last season saw Trestman excel in his first in the CFL, leading the Als to an 11-7-0 record and a date with the Calgary Stampeders in November’s Grey Cup.
However, like most players, coaches often seek an edge on their opponents; enter Trestman’s invitation to Proudfoot.
Still with limited CFL experience, last season’s coach of the year Runner-Up looks to acquire that edge through Proudfoot.
“He’s open-minded and doesn’t mince words,” said Trestman. “He did a great job at the end of the season. I know there has been some deterioration in his speech, but he has the ability to communicate and knows the game,” he added.
Riders go on without Dominguez
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are looking to go young heading into the 2009 CFL season, meaning that receiver Matt Dominguez, 30, will not be going with them.
Wednesday, the team announced that Dominguez will not be attending training camp.
Dominguez worked hard at rehabilitating the knee he injured last season in a game against the Stampeders, which subsequently led to his off-season release.
“Regarding his most recent knee surgery, to Matt’s full credit, he has worked very hard this off season, making substantial progress,”head coach Ken Miller said in a statement. “At this time, however, we feel the prudent decision is to enter training camp with the strong group of young talent we have assembled, and make any further decisions, if needed, after evaluating our new group very carefully.
“In making this decision, we are not closing the door completely on Matt’s career with the Roughriders. But if he should choose to pursue an opportunity elsewhere, Matt will certainly do so with our gratitude and very best wishes.”
However, Dominguez has no intention of playing for any other team.
“I just don’t foresee that in my future,” Dominguez told CKRM, a Regina radio station. “I don’t see me uprooting my family and moving on for another season. That’s not in the cards for me.”
Argos release Vanderjagt
The Toronto Argonauts have granted former Pro-Bowl kicker Mike Vanderjagt’s request to be released from the CFL team.
“After many conversations with my family, we have come to the decision that after 13 years of professional football, I’m better suited to be with my family in Florida,” Vanderjagt said in a statement. “At 39 years old, my priorities have changed.
“I enjoy my life out of the spotlight. I thoroughly appreciate all the Argonauts have done for me over the course of my career both before my time in the NFL and after. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the organization.”
Vanderjagt spent four years playing in the CFL, three of which were spent with Toronto, the other with Saskatchewan.
