St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, June 19, 2009 – Following their 37-24 pre-season win over the Argonauts at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Wednesday, the Alouettes were back on the field today.
Practicing indoors at the Stade du Haut-Richelieu, the team slimmed down its roster in preparation for its pre-season home game this coming Tuesday night at Montreal’s Percival Molson Stadium. The Als (1-0-0) will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-0-0) – 7 p.m., Corussports.com, CJAD 800 AM).
Hunt, Samuels & Richardson back in action
Linebacker Reggie Hunt, defensive back Stanford Samuels, and receiver Jamel Richardson all made their 2009 debuts today.
Hunt was back in action following a slight shoulder injury that held him off the field, and looked unaffected and ready to play.
Samuels, acquired as a free agent during the off-season, also looked sharp and was able to use his fresh legs to his advantage in one-on-ones. He is a five-year CFL veteran.
Richardson had perhaps the most impressive late camp debut, having finally recovered from a bout of pneumonia. While one would be inclined to give a player coming off that kind of affliction some leeway, he didn’t need any handouts as he seemed on top of his game with several “Richardson-esque” receptions.
The team also added tackle Josh Thompson to the lineup.
Haywood and Hill among today’s releases
Veteran defensive tackle Jerome Haywood and linebacker T.J. Hill were among a handful of players given their release today.
Haywood, also free agent acquisition, came back to Montreal following two seasons with the Blue Bombers. He was previously a member of the Alouettes in 2006.
Hill joined the team in 2007, leading the Als in tackles and finishing fourth for most knockdowns that year. He led Montreal in tackles last season as well, with 84, and recorded four sacks, one interception and forced one fumble.
The other players released today are:
– Non-import receiver Keith Godding;
– Import receiver Dorrel Jalloh;
– Import linebackers Jonathan Ordway and Tyrone Pruitt;
– Import defensive back Keith Williams.

The Alouettes will practice as of 2:30 at the Stade du Haut-Richelieu.
