Montreal – Just one more preparatory hurdle to jump as the Alouettes get ready for their
march towards November’s Grey Cup in Calgary.
Before the real fun kicks off on Canada day, Marc Trestman and his Alouettes (1-0-0) will play host to Mike Kelly and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-0-0) Tuesday night at Percival Molson Stadium.
Last week saw both teams come out on top in their first of two pre-season matchups.
The Bombers scored 19 first-quarter points en route to a 32-22 win over the Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg’s Canad Inns Stadium.
Winnipeg’s running back Lavarus Giles scored a pair of one-yard touchdowns and kicker Alexis Serna was perfect on the day, converting on all three of his field goal attempts.
Meanwhile, across the country in Toronto, the Als jumped out to an early 13-0 lead and never looked back in a 37-24 thumping of the Argonauts in front of 18,000 Rogers Centre fans.
Several of the Als’ veteran stars didn’t make the trip down the 401, with names like Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon, Anwar Stewart, Kerry Watkins, Scott Flory, Avon Cobourne, Mark Estelle, Davis Sanchez, and Matthieu Proulx all remaining at the team’s training camp facility in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
With the game-breakers back home, the opportunity was fully available for some of the younger talents on the roster to force Trestman and the rest of the coaching staff to give them a serious look when the time comes to lighten up the roster.
Receiver Frantz Hardy, quarterback Adrian McPherson, and running back Chris Jennings all left their own mark on the field last Wednesday night.
Hardy racked up 67 yards and a touchdown on eight catches, McPherson completed nine of his 12 passes for 108 yards and a rushing major, and Jennings was the game’s leading rusher, going for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Should the Als come out on top on Tuesday, it will mark the first time they go undefeated in pre-season action since 2006.
The Montreal Alouettes will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Stadium this Tuesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. (Corussports.com, CJAD 800 AM)
