Edmonton wins at home

Edmonton – Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray looked like his old self again, throwing touchdown passes to Fred Stamps and Calvin McCarty before running one in of his own as the Eskimos (3-2-0) beat the Alouettes (4-1-0) 33-19, ending Montreal’s season-opening undefeated streak at four.
While the Als made every effort possible to make it interesting late in the game, Ray – who had his best outing of the season by far – led his Eskimos to their second-straight win and now sit alone atop West Division with six points.
Just a week after Montreal prevented the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from scoring a touchdown in a 21-8 win, the Als failed to muster up any kind of offensive threat of their own, with their lone major coming on a one-yard Avon Cobourne run in the fourth quarter.
Cobourne’s strong 2009 season continued, as the tailback registered 58 rushing yards and 79 receiving in addition to the touchdown.
Despite being unable to throw a touchdown pass for the first time this season, Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo quietly put together a nice day under centre, completing 28 of his 34 passes for 236 yards.
And of course, leave it to A.C. to make something out of nothing.
Heading into tonight’s matchup, Calvillo needed just 34 passing yards to reach 60,000 on his career, and thanks to a 12-yard pass to Kerry Watkins in the first quarter, he did just that.
Calvillo was later replaced by Adrian McPherson late in the fourth quarter, giving the second-year pivot a chance to show his wares near the end of the game.
Montreal kicker Damon Duval continued his successful season, connecting on all four of his field goal attempts on the night. Duval had 13 points in the loss and now has 77 on the season, good for tops in the CFL.
The Alouettes will next host the Toronto Argonauts at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. (RDS HD, TSN HD, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD 800 AM).
