Montreal goes 6-1-0

Montreal – Heading into tonight’s matchup at Winnipeg’s Canad Inns Stadium, it had been 10 consecutive quarters and 117 pass attempts since Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo last found the end zone through the air, but with 3:30 left in the first quarter, his mini-slump was finally over and the Als were on the way to a big win.
The 16-year veteran’s 14-yard pass to slotback S.J. Green not only gave the Alouettes the lead for the rest of the game, it led to a great night for A.C. Calvillo eventually threw four touchdowns as Montreal beat Winnipeg 39-12 and improved to 6-1-0 on the season.
While the offence was busy adding to its East Division-leading points total, now at 237, the Als’ defence also continued its strong 2009 campaign. By keeping Bomber quarterback Michael Bishop off the board, the Als were able to prevent the opposition from scoring a major for a second-straight week.
Bishop also saw two of his passes intercepted, one by Matthieu Proulx for his second of the season and one by Davis Sanchez for his first. In fact, all of Winnipeg’s points on the night came off the foot of kicker Alexis Serna, who went four-for-five in field goals, his longest coming from 44 yards out.
For his part, Montreal’s Damon Duval was a little less busy than Serna, converting on his two attempts of the ballgame; he is now 18-of-23 this season.
Cobourne vs Reid
For the second game in as many weeks, Montreal running back Avon Cobourne was pitted against another one of the league’s premiere backs in Fred Reid. Reid was coming off a 167-yard, two touchdowns performance in a loss against Calgary in Week 6, giving him a one-yard lead over Cobourne for first place in rushing yards.
While Reid wasn’t as fortunate against the Als on Saturday night, he did retain his rushing lead as he and Cobourne both finished the night with 49 yards. They now sit at 535 and 534, respectively.
With the win, Montreal is still perfect against the East, and regardless of the Hamilton-Saskatchewan matchup tomorrow night, will remain in first place in the league.

Sanchez’s pick and the win mean he’ll contribute another $300 to the Tony Proudfoot Fund, to which the veteran cornerback is donating $200 for each of his interceptions this year and $100 for each Alouettes win – the pot now stands at $800… Slotback Ben Cahoon extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 116…Kerry Watkins’ 71-yard touchdown reception was the second-longest play of his career.
The Alouettes will next host the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Montreal’s only home “retro game” this season, on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. (RDS HD, TSN HD, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD 800 AM).
