Sam Etcheverry (1930-2009)
Last Sunday, the Canadian football community lost one of its most renowned players, former Alouette, Sam Etcheverry.
Known as “The Rifle”, Etcheverry quarterbacked the Alouettes from 1952 to 1960, setting virtually every team passing record. He totalled 30,303 yards and 186 touchdowns on 1,969 completions.
The Montreal Alouettes thank our fans for their constant support and kind words for Sam as he was clearly greatly respected by those who did and did not know him.

Proulx takes top Canadian honours
Alouettes safety Matthieu Proulx has been named the CFL’s Canadian player of the month.
Proulx had seven tackles, five special-teams tackles; four interceptions, one knockdown and one fumble recovery in August and is tied for second in the CFL for interceptions. Proulx is the third Alouette to take home a monthly honour this season, as July saw quarterback Anthony Calvillo named the league’s best offensive player, while kick returner Larry Taylor was best in special teams.
Winnipeg running back Fred Reid was named offensive player of the month, Stevie Baggs claimed top defensive players and Toronto kicker Justin Medlock was August’s best special teams player.
