Montreal, Sept. 13, 2009 – The Alouettes paid homage to former defensive tackle Glen Weir at halftime today in honour of his pending induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame later this month in a ceremony in Winnipeg. The class of 2009 also includes Tony Anselmo, Alondra Johnson, James Mills and Rudy Phillips.
“This means everything to me! Aside from getting married and having kids, this is the biggest moment of my life. There aren’t a lot of words you can say than that, at my age, it’s the best thing that can ever happen,” Weir said. “It’s very enjoyable to be with the guys again, a lot of my old teammates showed up and I’m very appreciative of everything, it’s been a great weekend.”
“I’m very proud of Glen, he should have been inducted a long time ago,” former teammate Gordon Judges said.” The 1977 Grey Cup was a great memory – Glen was fantastic all through the game, tackling the quarterback – he was all over the field! And he didn’t even have any staples on his cleats!”
Weir joined the Alouettes in 1972 following a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and rarely missed a game over his career. He played 203 games over 13 seasons, including 10 with the Alouettes and three with the Concordes. He was the Als’ career leader for most games played until current Alouette centre Bryan Chiu surpassed him earlier this season.
A six-time East Division All-Star he was also a three-time CFL All-Star and was chosen the East Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1977. He played in five Grey Cups, including championship wins in 1974 and 1977 and was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the 1977 title game.
