Montreal – Blue Bombers quarterback Michael Bishop probably isn’t sure what to think of his next visit to Montreal.
An early-season acquisition by Winnipeg, Bishop hasn’t tasted victory at the expense of the Alouettes since 2007 as a member of the Toronto Argonauts’ first-place East Division team – in fact, Bishop has just a pair of wins in his career against Montreal as a starter.
Perhaps the bruising-yet-agile pivot who once battled future Hall-of-Famer Damon Allen for the number one job in Toronto, has seen his luck run out on him – or perhaps after two years of waiting, is finally due for a W.
Either way, Sunday afternoon’s tilt between Bishop’s Bombers and the Alouettes has all the indications of being a good one.
Back-to-back home tilts
For the second-straight week, the Als will run into a foe with whom they have shared words with this season. After getting the best of BC’s JoJuan Armour who went after Avon Cobourne on the sidelines and in the media, Montreal now has the CFL’s leading rusher’s verbal antics to deal with.
Heading into their last matchup on Aug. 15, Fred Reid publically announced his views on the Montreal defensive line, stating that the foursome of John Bowman, Eric Wilson, Keron Williams and Anwar Stewart, were nothing but “O.K.”
The D-line responded on the field, allowing Reid to tally just 49 yards on 10 carries.
This week, the Als play their second-straight home contest for the first time this season, after putting together an important win against the Lions last week. In the second of a two-game set against the Leos, the Als offence came to life as quarterback Anthony Calvillo threw for 334 yards and a touchdown and added 42 yards and a score on the ground.
Calvillo’s main target on the afternoon was Jamel Richardson, as he connected with the speedy slotback for 103 yards and a touchdown. The victory was all the sweeter when Cobourne rushed for the game-winning touchdown on a nearly identical play as the one which was re-called a week earlier in BC due to an officiating error.
On the Western front, the Bombers found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided score following the Banjo Bowl, falling 55-10 to the Roughriders in Winnipeg.
