Hammond, LA – Even though it’s always seemed a little premature in my book, this is the time of year votes for CFL player awards start rolling in. And just like my take on All-Star voting, I can’t help but feel several Alouettes deserve serious consideration for the hardware.
Finishing out one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory, the Alouettes field excellent players in every phase of the game. Take a look at the leader boards in just about every statistical category the CFL records and you’re sure to find Als players at or near the top in every instance. Being as objective as I can, there just aren’t enough trophies available to reward that kind of excellence.
So, if the hardware was sitting around my house, who would I be handing it to?
Most Outstanding Player: Anthony Calvillo. AC’s been as consistent as the sun rising this year. He’s a rare combination of production, efficiency, and leadership, and I would be shocked if he doesn’t bring home the MOP trophy for the second consecutive year.
Most Outstanding Defensive Player: Hard to single out one player from a stellar defensive line this season, but I’m going with Anwar Stewart. Stewart has not only been chasing the lead in sacks all season, but he’s provided much more than pressure for the Als’ defence this year. His versatility and athleticism allow him to defend the run as well as the pass, and the savvy he displays along the defensive front is simply unparalleled in the league.
Most Outstanding Canadian Player: No need to think out of the box on this one, Ben Cahoon. Cahoon leads all receivers in catches this season and is a shoe-in to post his eighth consecutive 1000-yard season.
Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman: Again, it’s tough to single out one member of a group that’s played as well as the Als’ O-line has played. Regardless of personnel, they’ve managed to keep Calvillo clean and plow holes for the rushing attack. That said, I think Bryan Chiu has played some of the finest ball of his distinguished career and certainly deserves some recognition.
Most Outstanding Rookie: Jerald Brown. Having watched Brown in the Arena league, it’s hard for me to consider him a rookie, but he definitely deserves credit for adapting his game to the big field this season. With four picks and a game-changing fumble recovery, Brown has been a great addition to the squad.0
Most Outstanding Special Teams Player: A no-brainer here, Damon Duval. Duval is the CFL’s top scorer, and has led the league for most of the year in punting average. He manufactures points and field position like no one else in the CFL.
