The Montreal Alouettes are encouraging their fans to donate generously to the Canadian Red Cross to help with emergency efforts in Haiti following that country’s destructive earthquake last week. The Alouettes are particularly touched by this event as two players, Guillaume Allard-Caméus and Danny Desriveaux, as well as defensive coach Jean-Marc Edme have family in Haiti.

“We were worried because we have family there, but thank God they’re safe and sound. There is a lot of damage where they are, but my family was very lucky compared to many others,” Desriveaux said. “The best way for people to help is to give to a recognized charity. I think Quebecers, especially those in the football community, know that every cent they can contribute will be of great help. The goal now is to get Haiti back on its feet.”
The Government of Canada has promised to match every donation made by a Canadian to a specific group of recognized charities, including the Canadian Red Cross, up to a cap of $50 million. For more information on this initiative, please visit the Canadian International Development Agency’s website.
“I had just spoken with one of my cousins about half an hour before the earthquake happened – he was at his university, just behind the presidential palace. Both of those buildings were destroyed. He had just been telling me how things were getting better in Haiti and then this disaster happened,” said Allard-Caméus. “I did manage to find out about my family, however, and thankfully they’re all OK. Hopefully now we can help the country through donations.”
“I’m happy to see that Quebecers hold the Haitian people close to their hearts and are ready to help,” Edme said. “The people there truly need our help and I would like to personally thank everyone who has been able to and who will give. I’ve gotten some news from my uncle, but I still haven’t heard from my grandmother. It’s very difficult for me to focus on my job scouting players right now not knowing what happened, but I’m doing my utmost to stay positive.”
