EnvironmentALS in 2010

Montreal, Apr. 21, 2010 – In honour of Earth Day tomorrow, the Montreal Alouettes are pleased to announce the details on the organization’s EnvironmentALS program for the 2010 season.

2010 EnvironmentALS plan

The Alouettes became the first professional sports organization to be carbon-neutral in 2008, working to reduce the impact of their football and corporate activities on the environment through a detailed sustainability program and by purchasing carbon credits. The team has been purchasing Gold Standard credits ever since, choosing to buy only the highest-quality carbon credits available.

Last year, the team recycled over 40 per cent of the waste produced at its home games by employing a sorting system to divert as much as possible towards recycling. The organization showed further respect to the environment in the course of its stadium expansion project by using environmentally-friendly materials and equipment when possible; for example, ultra-low flush toilets were installed in the new washrooms, a green roof was installed on the new ticket office, and close to 300 new trees will be planted in the area.

One of the principal objectives of the program in 2010 will be to bring environmental issues to the forefront of public discourse. The Alouettes will raise their presence in such environmentally conscious activities as the “Roulez mieux” and “En ville sans ma voiture” campaigns, to name a few. Team mascot Touché will also be active in the plan, encouraging people in the stands to recycle during home games.

The Alouettes intend to pursue their environmental action plan while raising the awareness of their fans, the community, their suppliers and their sponsors about the fundamental principles of environmental sustainability.
