Sherbrooke, June 16, 2010 – There are a few sure signs of summer, and one of them is the start of the Canadian Football League season. With the 2010 campaign just on the horizon, the intensity at practice has definitely bumped up a notch. This also means that training camp is soon coming to an end, so the coaches introduced a new element today: simulated crowd noise.
The players had their last back-to-back full practices (one of tomorrow’s will be a special-teams walkthrough), and there was at least one major standout as receiver S.J. Green made a spectacular one-handed catch that would be shown over and over on highlights had it taken place during a game. Even head coach Marc Trestman ran into the end zone to congratulate him, as did the other offensive players on the field.
“It was a good day for me today and I’m happy to be part of all this. I’ll do everything I can to make the team look good,” Green said. “Seeing Coach Trestman running towards me after my catch was really motivating.”
An inspiration
The Alouettes are known for their dramatic comeback last November, and now they’ll have a chance to meet someone whose name will always be associated to comebacks in the person of Frank Reich.
The former Bills quarterback, who arrived at Bishop’s on Wednesday, led Buffalo to probably the greatest comeback in NFL history. On Jan. 3, 1993, Reich and the Bills were losing 35-3 to the Houston Oilers and he led his team to a 41-38 overtime win.
Reich, who now coaches quarterbacks for the Indianapolis Colts is one of Trestman’s guests at camp for the next few days. He got to know the Als’ head man with the Detroit Lions, but their paths had crossed once before. When Reich was starring with the Maryland Terrapins in the 80s, he led his team to an inspiring comeback from a 31-0 deficit to Trestman’s Miami Hurricanes for a 41-38 win.
Back with the team
Import defensive tackle Justin Lawrence (Morgan State) was back with the team on Wednesday.
Tomorrow
The Alouettes will hold two morning practices on Thursday from 7:50 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. with media availability to follow on field after the second practice.
