Montreal – With just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter and with his Alouettes trailing by six, quarterback Anthony Calvillo dug deep then went deep to Brian Bratton.
With that 48-yard reception, Calvillo put the finishing touches on a comeback win for the Alouettes against the last place Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 44-40.
Can’t touch him
After a first quarter that saw the Als take a 10-0 lead over a Bombers squad that seemed helpless, the second frame saw Winnipeg storm back to score 19 unanswered points en-route to a 27-16 half-time lead.
It seemed as though the Bombers were on their way to a crucial upset win over the first-place Alouettes, a win that would go very far for their hopes at a crossover playoff berth at season’s end.
However, the second half saw the Alouettes’ slumbering offence finally wake up. Calvillo and Bombers’ quarterback Steven Jyles found themselves in a shootout, seemingly exchanging touchdown passes at will and by drive.
As usual, it was Calvillo that came out on top. The 17-year CFL veteran completed 36-of-54 passes for 477 yards and five touchdown passes in the road win.
Among those 36 completions, five landed in the hands of slotback Ben Cahoon.
Big Ben, Big Milestone
The win was certainly one for the DVD collection, as not only did fans witness a spectacular fourth quarter, they also witnessed one of the league’s all-time greats; achieve one of its most elusive milestones.
With five receptions on the night, Cahoon became just the 2nd player in CFL history with 1,000 career catches. He now needs just seven to pass Terry Vaughn for 1st overall.
While Cahoon was busy setting records, SJ Green and Bratton were busy setting the tone. Bratton was spectacular in relief for Kerry Watkins, who left the game with a shoulder injury in the first half. The fourth-year Alouette, Bratton, hauled in seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns while Green had a score of his own in addition to his 113 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, De’Audra Dix came up with a very timely interception on a trick play by the Bombers, seemingly swinging momentum in the Als’ favour. Linebacker Shea Emry had a game-high seven tackles, while Diamond Ferri continued his strong play, recording two tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
The Alouettes next play the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium on Oct. 1 at 9pm EST RDSHD, TSNHD, NRJ, CJAD
