Montreal – For Montreal native and Alouettes safety Étienne Boulay, the old saying ‘how time flies when you’re having fun’ seems just right.
Already in his fifth CFL season – all spent with the Alouettes – Boulay is proud of what he’s accomplished in the early stages of his career. “I’m proud of myself. I ‘ve managed to build some level of credibility among the coaching staff, one that has allowed me to maintain a certain level of play that has kept me on the active roster.” said Boulay.
Already a holder of Grey Cup ring thanks to last season’s win over Saskatchewan at McMahon Stadium, Boulay – along with the rest of his teammates – is looking to add a few more to his repertoire. “I hope that by the time my career is nearing its end, that I have a few more in my trophy case,” he admitted.
His early-career success is no mistake, either. Since arriving at his first training camp in 2006 after being drafted in the second round by the Als in the Canadian Rookie Draft, Boulay’s work ethic has been among the team’s best.
Versatility
Boulay’s flexibility across the field has given him a distinct advantage over any newcomers. Always with a positive attitude, Boulay has lined up as a safety, defensive back and a linebacker, a position he played all through his college years.
“I’m particularly proud of my flexibility,” said Boulay.
Heading into the 2010 season, Boulay had played in 59 regular season games, accumulating 81 defensive tackles, 36 special teams tackles, 13 knockdowns and seven interceptions.
This year alone, he’s managed to register 31 defensive tackles and two interceptions in 13 games to this point. His on-field experience has translated nicely into reliability for Boulay.
“All of my work has allowed me to become a better player overall,” he said.
As defending CFL champions, the Als have performed in spectacular fashion. It has become a rarity to see a team maintain a heightened level of performance following a championship season. But as always, Boulay knows that rewards only come with work.
“Our opponents our coming for us every game, they know who they’re up against. But we know we have the tools to keep going.”
The Alouettes will face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Stadium this Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. (RDSHD, TSNHD, NRJ, CJAD 800).
