Montreal, Nov. 3, 2010 – The Canadian Football League announced today each team’s nominees for the 2010 Most Outstanding Player awards. The following are the Alouettes’ nominees:
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER: ANTHONY CALVILLO* (8th nomination)
Named the CFL’s 2003, 2008 and 2009 Most Outstanding Player, Calvillo was also a finalist for the award in 2002 and 2004 and is the Alouettes’ nominee for the eight time of his career. He currently leads the CFL with 380 completions, a 67.6 pass completion percentage and a 108.1 efficiency rating. He’s also second in the league with 32 passing touchdowns, 562 attempts and 4,839 passing yards. He became the second quarterback in CFL history to reach 5,000 career completions and surpassed 300 passing touchdowns with the Alouettes. He also became the team’s all-time leader for most career games played with the organization, ahead of Bryan Chiu.
He was named Offensive Player of the Month of July and Offensive Player of the Week for weeks 13, 15 and 18.
MOST OUTSTANDING CANADIAN: BEN CAHOON (9th nomination)
Named the CFL’s top Canadian player in both 2002 and 2003, Cahoon earns a ninth consecutive nomination as the Alouettes’ Most Outstanding Canadian. This year, he became the CFL’s all-time reception leader, surpassing Terry Vaughn, after he caught the 1,007th pass of his career. He then surpassed Ray Elgaard for sixth place in the CFL’s all-time receiving yards list, becoming the league’s all-time receiving yards leader by a Canadian.
MOST OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE PLAYER: CHIP COX* (1st nomination)
After being selected on the CFL All-Star team for the first time of his career in 2009, Cox continued his domination on the Alouettes’ defence this season. He leads the team and is fifth in the CFL with 80 defensive tackles and also tied for first in the league with four forced fumbles. He also recorded two interceptions, three tackles for a loss of four yards, six knockdowns, 11 special teams tackles and two fumble recoveries, including 14-yard touchdown return. He also surpassed Stefan Reid for first place in team history – since 1996 – for most career defensive tackles.
He was named Defensive Player of the Month in August and Defensive Player of the Week for weeks 6 and 8.
MOST OUTSTANDING LINEMAN: JOSH BOURKE (1st nomination)
Named a 2008 and 2009 East Division All-Star, Bourke earns his first nomination as the Alouettes’ Most Outstanding Lineman, taking over elite guard and Als’ nominee since 2005, Scott Flory. He was part of an offensive line that allowed the third least quarterback sacks this season while helping the Alouettes’ offence lead the CFL in most passing categories.
MOST OUTSTANDING ROOKIE: MARC-OLIVIER BROUILLETTE (1st nomination)
The former Montreal Carabins’ quarterback showed a lot of versatility and understanding of the game when he moved to linebacker and free safety in his first year with the Alouettes. He recorded his first career interception in only his second professional game and also registered five defensive tackles and four special teams tackles in nine games this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER: MICHAEL GIFFIN (1st nomination)
Fullback Michael Giffin enjoyed a successful second season with the Alouettes as he currently leads the team and is tied for fourth place in the CFL with 19 special teams tackles, while also blocking a punt on July 22 against the Tiger-Cats. He also recorded a defensive tackle this season.
