PROUDFOOT, John Anthony (Tony)
1949 – 2010
Peacefully, surrounded by family, at West Island Palliative Residence, Kirkland on December 30, 2010, at the age of 61. Beloved husband of Vicki and cherished father of Michael, Lindsay and Lauren. He will be greatly missed by his beautiful family. Loving son of Janet and the late Charlie Proudfoot. Survived by brother and sisters Don (Erica), Patti (Rick Morgan), Jane (Paul Hoba) and Chuck (the late Bianca and partner Marsha), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Tony loved football and his Montreal Alouettes and played in the CFL for 12 years. He was a respected teacher at Dawson College, broadcaster for CJAD, contributor to The Montreal Gazette, and author of a book on high performance players. He was bestowed with many awards of recognition and accomplishment in the last few years, all accepted humbly and graciously.
He will be remembered for his courageous and open fight with ALS, and for his tireless efforts in promoting awareness and educating as many people as possible about this horrible disease. Caught in a downward spiral with an inevitable conclusion, he selfishly opened up his world and its tribulations, that one day ALS will not be a guaranteed death. He did it as a fighter and a as gentleman.
Special thanks to Dr. Angela Genge and her professional expertise and personal kindness. Tony’s last few days were peaceful and painless thanks to expert care and compassion of the West Island Palliative Residence.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 4th, 2-4 and 7-9 at Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 4239, boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux. The funeral service will be held at Cedar Park United Church, Lakeview Ave., Pointe Claire, at 11:00am, Wednesday, January 5th.
