Sherbrooke, June 5, 2011 – Everything was in place to ensure a strong start to the Montreal Alouettes’ 2011 season this Sunday at Bishop’s University’s Coulter Field in Sherbooke: Intensity, spectacular catches and some 500 loud fans cheering on their favourite team on opening day of training camp presented by CN.
After two intense practices under a glorious sun, players, coaches and management were presented to the crowd on site. Following the festivities, fans were then provided with the chance to meet and have their pictures taken with their favourite players, as well as collect autographs on the field.
The first day of camp saw many of the Alouettes’ taller receivers making a number of spectacular catches. Last year’s Grey Cup most outstanding player, Jamel Richardson, seemed to have picked up exactly where he left off in 2010 making one of the most outstanding one-handed catches of the day.
Not to be outdone however, Tim Maypray, typically renowned for his exploits on kick returns, leaped and made a great catch which got the crowd on hand riled up, proving that even the Alouettes’ shorter receivers are capable of making big plays.
Departure and arrival
After the first practice of camp, the Alouettes released defensive tackle Alan-Michael Cash. This roster spot allowed Taylor Scott, who plays the same position, to join the team.
Open to the public
The Alouettes’ training camp will get back underway tomorrow morning at 7:50 at Coulter Field when the first of two back-to-back practices kicks off. The Alouettes will remain at Bishop’s until June 20. Every practice during that span will be open to the public, and a complete practice schedule can be found online here.
