Sherbrooke, June 7, 2011 – The Montreal Alouettes have a problem that most teams would welcome with open arms. They have two excellent non-import kickers on their roster in Sean Whyte and Sandro DeAngelis. Although Montreal’s Head Coach, Marc Trestman, has stated that Whyte is expected to start the season, that doesn’t mean that DeAngelis can’t make the the coach change his mind.
“They brought me in to be the guy. From the beginning I was told that it is my job to lose,” said Whyte following practice on Tuesday.
Both kickers have been competing and working hard during camp. They are always the first two on Coulter Field at Bishop’s University, and start their warm-ups 40 minutes before the rest of the team’s first morning practice.
“We run, stretch and begin by working on short field goals before eventually moving on to punts. We both have our own rituals, so sometimes we practice together and other times we practice on our own,” added Whyte.
New arrivals
Suspended since the beginning of camp, defensive end Jermaine McElveen joined his teammates on Tuesday. The Alouettes also added linebacker Mike Thomas and defensive end Shomari Earls.
Helping hand
The Alouettes’ coaching staff has been aided by two guest coaches during the 2011 training camp: Joe Reich and Jason Eck.
Reich is the head coach for the Wingate University Bulldogs and has coached Montreal Alouettes’ star defensive end, John Bowman. Eck begins his first season at Hampton University as the Offensive Line Coach.
Tomorrow
Training camp will resume on Wednesday at Coulter Field at Bishop’s University, with back-to-back practices starting at 7:50 a.m.
