Sherbrooke, June 10, 2011 – Alouettes receiver Kerry Watkins, who has thus far not attended training camp due to sinus problems, underwent surgery Thursday at Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital. The operation, which saw the receiver’s adenoid glands removed, was performed by Dr. Mark Tewfik and was a success.
Although Watkins will not be able to join his teammates at Bishop’s immediately, he is expected to return within the next two weeks.
Obstructed adenoid glands can cause sinus blockage, which can lead to a difficulty in breathing. Fortunately, a person who has had their adenoid glands removed can live a perfectly normal life.
Emphasis on special teams
The Alouettes spent the day’s entire first practice working on special teams. A part of the game that often gets overlooked, Head Coach Marc Trestman has made a point of ensuring that all three facets of the game have received the attention required since camp began on Sunday.
“Special teams are a priority as they account for one third of the game. The field is bigger and our guys need to get used to that. It’s important that we emphasize this,” said Trestman following Friday’s practice.
Movement
The Alouettes had two new players on the field on Friday: Receiver Rashad Slaughter and defensive lineman Jabari Fletcher.
Tomorrow
Training camp will resume on Saturday at Coulter Field at Bishop’s University, with a single practice starting at 2:30 p.m., and scheduled to end at around 4:45 p.m. Consult the team’s complete training camp schedule here.
