Montreal, July 15, 2011 – Anthony Calvillo is the CFL’s new leading career touchdown passer, having thrown his 395th career touchdown Friday at Percival Molson Stadium, versus the Toronto Argonauts. Eric Deslauriers was on the receiving end of the pass which came with 5:08 to go in the first quarter and allowed Calvillo to dislodge former Argonauts quarterback Damon Allen from the CFL’s touchdown passing throne.
“It’s an achievement that really speaks to Anthony’s excellence,” said Kerry Watkins, who leads current Alouettes receivers in terms of career passes caught from Calvillo with 40.
“The two of us have developed a nice complicity over the years.”
“His work ethic is remarkable and inspiring. During practices, he’s helped me better understand not only my responsibilities as a receiver, but also the particularities of the Canadian game. Anthony has mastered the art of communication.”
“Another of his great qualities as a player is his ability to quickly read a defence in the seconds following the snap.”
“His experience is invaluable,” said Tim Maypray, who saw his name written in history last Saturday in Regina after Calvillo made him the target for touchdown pass number 394.
Memories of the catch will remain etched in Maypray’s mind for the rest of his career. “I knew that Anthony was close to tying an important record, and I was thrilled when I found out that I was the one who made the historic catch.”
