Montreal, July 19, 2011 – The Montreal Alouettes (3-0) remain undefeated with three weeks of football already in the books, thanks in no small part to the outstanding performances of Brandon Whitaker and Chip Cox, who were named the CFL’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, following Friday’s game versus the Argonauts.
Brandon Whitaker – Offensive Player of the Week
Whitaker was a workhorse last week, leading the Alouettes to a 40-17 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at Percival Molson Stadium. The Alouettes’ running back accumulated a game-high 120 yards on 16 carries as well as one rushing touchdown. He also added 11 receptions, good for 94 yards, bringing his total to 214 yards from scrimmage. Whitaker’s performance was highlighted by a 43-yard touchdown run, his longest of the season. After three weeks, he leads the CFL in rushing yards with 259.
Chip Cox – Defensive Player of the Week
Standout linebacker Chip Cox recorded an interception and ran back a fumble recovery 108 yards for a touchdown, tying a CFL record in the process. His two turnovers led to 10 points. Cox is fourth on the Alouettes’ defence in tackles with nine, first in interceptions with one and is the only defender on team to have scored a touchdown this season.
The Alouettes will face the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Percival Molson Stadium this Sunday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. (RDSHD, TSNHD, CKAC, CJAD and Sirius 157).
