Hamilton, July 29, 2011 – Following a short week, the Montreal Alouettes are off to a slow start against the Tiger-Cats, trailing Hamilton 17-13 after 30 minutes of play at a steamy Ivor Wynne Stadium.
The first half saw quarterback Anthony Calvillo, defensive tackle Josh Bourke, and receiver Kerry Watkins all return to the lineup, the latter making his 2011 season debut with the Alouettes. The Calvillo-Watkins duo hooked up early for a seven-yard reception on the very first play from scrimmage.
Shortly after however, Calvillo and his receivers had difficulty sustaining drives and staying on the field, struggling with penalties which favored the Tiger-Cats.
Running-back Avon Cobourne had a dream start for a player facing his former team. On his first run of the game, Cobourne broke for 17 yards and was vital in his team’s opening scoring drive which culminated in 91 yards. Cobourne finished the first half with 39 rushing yards and 37 passing yards.
Calvillo threw a seven-yard touchdown strike to Jamel Richardson late in the second quarter to keep the game close, his first of the night. The 18-year veteran is now only three touchdown passes away from being the first quarterback in CFL history to reach the 400 touchdown pass plateau.
Calvillo has completed 11 passes for 164 yards.
