Last Thursday, for the second time in as many games against the Toronto Argonauts, Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo made history, breaking the CFL’s all-time passing completions record previously set in 2007 by former-Argo Damon Allen.
It marked the second time in four weeks that Calvillo broke one of Allen’s records, as fans will recall that on July 15 at Percival Molson Stadium, AC tossed his 395th career touchdown pass to receiver Éric Deslauriers, eclipsing Allen’s mark of 394, which had also been set in 2007.
With the completions record now under his belt, only one major record remains to be surpassed, and fittingly enough, it appears as though Calvillo has left what many consider to be the best, including the 18-year veteran himself, for last; Damon Allen’s all-time passing yardage record, a record which leads both the CFL and the NFL.
Although one would often be hard-pressed to hear Calvillo, a stout proponent of placing team honours before individual ones, acknowledge this year’s impressive record-run, he did admit, prior to the start of the season at training camp, that the total passing yardage record is the most important in his eyes, citing the amount of work that it represents.
Likewise, it is also the only record that incumbent Damon Allen would like to be on-hand for in person, the latter mentioning so during a conference call in July.
Coincidentally, after six games this season, Calvillo is currently projected to break Allen’s record for most passing yards on Thanksgiving Monday, October 10, 2011, when the Alouettes host – who else – the Argos at Percival Molson Stadium, although a lot of football remains to be played between now and then.
In the more immediate term however, Calvillo is set to reach a duo of important career milestones, likely as soon as Thursday for at least one of the two, if not both.
Following last week’s game, AC now stands at 69,995 career passing yards thrown, just five away from the 70,000 mark. Only one other quarterback in CFL history has thrown for over 70,000 yards, Damon Allen, while only three QBs total have done so in the history of pro football, the other two being Brett Favre and Warren Moon, the latter reaching the mark cumulatively on both sides of the border.
Calvillo is also just two touchdown tosses away from becoming the inaugural member of the CFL’s 400 Club. To date, no quarterback in CFL history has thrown for 400 career touchdowns, while south of the border, only 3 QBs have achieved the feat, namely, Brett Favre, Warren Moon, and Dan Marino.
The Alouettes will face the Edmonton Eskimos at Percival Molson Stadium this Thursday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m.
