This week of By the Numbers compares leading CFL quarterbacks Anthony Calvillo and Ricky Ray in preparation for Thursday night’s matchup between their two teams’ dominant offences.
History:
The clubs have faced each other six times since 2008, with the Als boasting 4-2 record over the Esks.
Edmonton has lost their last three games against Montreal.
Milestones:
Calvillo needs five yards to reach 70,000 and two TD passes to be the first to reach the 400 mark.
Ray needs 345 to reach 38,000 passing yards.
AC is second in all-time passing yards with 69,995. Ray squeaked into the top ten with 37,655 yards.
This Season:
The Eskimos were held to a season-low 268 yards of net offence by Winnipeg last week – just the first time in 2011 they have gained less than 300 yards. Last year Edmonton was held under 300 yards seven times (1-6 on those games).
Calvillo completed 17-of-20 first down pass attempts for 212 yards last week. For the year, Montreal has been the most effective first down passing team with 1,102 yards for an amazing 71.2% completion rate (CFL avg 65.0%).
Ray has at least one TD pass in his past eight consecutive games.
AC leads the league in passing yards (1,834), has avoided the most picks (three after week six), and has the most touchdown passes (12).
The clubs lead the league in scoring, with Montreal averaging a league high of 32.5 points per game and Edmonton at 28.2 points.
They also have the lead in combined yardage, with Montreal sitting at 2,634 and Edmonton at 2,419 and have the highest completion percentage, with 66.1 and 65.7 respectively.
Ray leads the league in 30+ yard passes with 11. Although Calvillo fared well with nine, Winnipeg’s Buck Pierce edged the veteran for second place with ten.
