Montreal – For the first time this season, the Alouettes’ defence prevented an opposing offence from scoring a single touchdown during a game, allowing Montreal to notch a convincing 27-4 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos last Thursday at Percival Molson Stadium. Linebacker Chip Cox and kicker Sean Whyte, who were named Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, played a significant role in ensuring the Alouettes’ fifth win of the season.
Chip Cox – Defensive Player of the Week
Linebacker Chip Cox had a stand-out performance versus the Eskimos, forcing a fumble, recording four defensive tackles and registering two sacks on quarterback Ricky Ray, while also being named the Player of the Game immediately following the action last Thursday.
Cox is currently ranked second on the team in defensive tackles with 29, tied for first in interceptions with one and is the only defender on the team to have scored a touchdown this season following his memorable fumble recovery versus the Argos in Week 3, which he ran back 108 yards for a major, tying a CFL record in the process.
This week’s nod marks the second time this season that Cox is named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Sean Whyte – Special Teams Player of the Week
The Alouettes did not hesitate to sign non-import kicker Sean Whyte to their roster via a surprise draft-day move earlier this year, evidently knowing that the Surrey, B.C. native was on the verge of a breakout season. Whyte has successfully connected on 19 straight field goals and has been perfect in his last six starts with the Alouettes, hitting four last week versus Edmonton. His consistency has been noted across the league and he is on the verge of tying the team’s all-time record of 21 consecutive field goals.
