Montreal, August 31, 2011 – Montreal Alouettes non-import kicker Sean Whyte has been named the CFL’s Special Teams Player of the Month for the month of August. This is the first time in his promising career that Whyte receives the honour, after going perfect in the month and making nine field goals in as many attempts.
Whyte leads the CFL in both kicking points scored (95) and field goals made (22) as the midway point of the 2011 regular season approaches. Furthermore, his placekicking accuracy, which currently stands at 95.7 percent, is also good for tops in the league. His longest field goal of the season so far came from 48 yards out against the Toronto Argonauts on August 4.
Whyte was also named the Special Teams Player of the Week on two separate occasions in August, once following Week 7 versus the Eskimos and then again this past Saturday in Calgary following a brilliant performance in which he connected on his three field goals and three converts. He also averaged 45.6 yards on seven punts and added a single.
In that same game facing the Stampeders, the Surrey, B.C. native also surpassed Don Sweet’s team-record 21 consecutive successful attempts and now finds himself just 6 field goals short of tying the CFL record for most consecutive complete field goals, which stands at 28. He is currently in third place in CFL history for most consecutive field goals.
