Less than two weeks after failing to secure top spot in the East opposite Winnipeg at Percival Molson Stadium, doom and gloom scenarios abound, the Alouettes are once again set to face the Bombers with first place on the line.
With parity being the hallmark of the 2011 CFL Season, the Bombers, one year removed from a 4-14 campaign, managed to edge out the Alouettes 25-23 in their first meeting this year.
Although bouncing back with a win on the road against the best in the West Edmonton Eskimos represented no small feat on the part of the Als, Marc Trestman‘s crew likely knew that doing so would be enough to set the table for this week’s first place showdown.
After all, defeating the Alouettes this season has proven to be the kryptonite to other opponents. That is, every team that has beaten Montreal this year has gone on to lose its very next game, be it at home or on the road.
And despite being the heavy favourites this past weekend in Toronto, Winnipeg was no different, falling to the Argos in a wild one at Rogers Centre reminiscent to Montreal’s zany Week 18 triumph a year ago.
The Bombers also lost star running back Fred Reid on Saturday, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer having suffered a torn ACL in the loss.
Nevertheless, the 8-4 Winnipeg team represents a formidable foe for the Alouettes, who will practice twice this week, today and tomorrow, in preparation for Friday’s first-place tilt.
