MONTREAL – After 30 minutes of football on a sunny autumn day in downtown Montreal, the Alouettes trail the Argonauts by a score of 16-13 on this holiday Monday matchup at Percival Molson Stadium.
A win can clinch a playoff berth for the Alouettes and would allow them to keep pace with Winnipeg in the East Division.
“We have to stay focused on what we can control and let the game take care of itself,” said head coach Marc Trestman prior to kick-off. “Our focus and energy needs to remain on winning football games and paying attention to the details that go into that,” he added.
Kicker Sean Whyte scored the game’s first points following a 28-yard field goal on the Als’ opening possession, giving the home team an early 3-0 lead. The Argos responded almost immediately however, with a 37-yard field goal by Noel Prefontaine to tie the game on the following drive.
Chad Owens then put his team in front on the game’s next series, returning a punt 58 yards for the touchdown.
In the second quarter, Whyte cut into the Toronto lead with a 33-yard field goal, his second of the match. Adrian McPherson tied the game briefly with a five-yard touchdown run near the end of the half.
Quarterback Anthony Calvillo completed 13 of 21 passes for 134 yards after two quarters. Calvillo is expected to break Damon Allen’s all-time yardage record in the second half and is now just 124 yards away from accomplishing the feat.
Fellow teammate and league-leading rusher Brandon Whitaker continues to play a pivotal role on offense and reached his first 1,000 yard rushing season in the CFL following a 25-yard scamper in the first quarter. He has six carries for 53 yards after two quarters.
Once again, defensive end John Bowman is having another solid season and now sits at eight sacks on the season. The all-star defensive end is now only one sack away from his 50th career sack.
