MONTREAL – To celebrate Earth Day 2012, Alouettes players, through the Together at School program with CN and the Alouettes, will show students at Sainte Béatrice School in Laval on Monday how to implement an ecological lunch box program.

Players will encourage students to use lunch boxes or reusable bags, reusable drink containers, cloth napkins, and reusable utensils. In addition, players will suggest healthy foods to fill the students’ stomachs, but not the local landfill. All player school visits during Earth Week will feature an environmental component.
In 2008, the Montreal Alouettes organization, through its EnvironmentALS program, became the first professional Canadian sports team to be carbon neutral and remains the only one to hold that distinction to this day. Furthermore, in 2011 the team implemented several new initiatives.
Through its recycling and composting efforts, the team finished last season with a 54.9% diversion rate at Percival Molson Stadium. The diversion rate is a measure of the total quantity of waste that is ‘diverted’ from going to the landfill as a percentage of the total waste generated. The volume of waste brought to the landfill diminished by over 2,500 kilograms versus the 2010 season.
Fans attending games were encouraged to recycle on the scoreboard by the team’s mascot, Touché, who collected fans’ empty cans, bottles, and other recyclable items in the stands.
After each game, uneaten food from the luxury suites was picked up by La Tablée des Chefs and distributed to families in need.
In order to increase its role as a leader in the environmental community, the Montreal Alouettes organization joined The SME Council for Sustainability, an initiative of the Network for Business Sustainability. This council aims to advance the issue of the sustainable development in small and medium size enterprises.
As a company, the Alouettes recently implemented several office-wide policies to increase green efforts, including the commitment to use of only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved recycled paper products. Frequent inspections of the office’s waste and recycling bins also occur to monitor Alouettes employee efforts.
