MONTREAL – Anthony Calvillo won’t be the only quarterback at training camp this year with a championship ring on his finger.
Among the rookies hitting the field at Bishop’s University this June 3 is non-import quarterback Kyle Quinlan, who signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes on Monday.
Quinlan led the McMaster University Marauders to the 2011 Vanier Cup championship for the first time in the school’s history last November and was named the game’s MVP following his remarkable performance in Vancouver. Under the lights at B.C. Place Stadium, the six-foot-three, 215-pound QB completed 36-of-55 pass attempts for 482 yards and two touchdowns while adding 106 yards rushing in a thrilling 41-38 double overtime victory over the Laval Rouge et Or in the national title game.
The 23-year-old native of South Woodslee, Ontario showcased his accuracy with the Marauders in 2011, completing close to 65 percent of his passes while throwing for 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Quinlan will compete for a spot on the Alouettes roster behind Calvillo and backup Adrian McPherson, and could become just the second Canadian quarterback to earn a CFL roster spot after the Calgary’s Brad Sinopoli, who signed with the Stamps in 2011.
