MONTREAL – The boys might be in the middle of enjoying their bye week, but that didn’t stop S.J. Green from checking in with us. Here’s what the Alouettes star receiver had to say.
How does S.J. Green keep busy during the bye week?
Daddy Day Care is what I call it. (laughs) Until my wife gets back home from work, I’m a stay-at-home dad and that sure keeps me busy. I took a flight down to Florida on Sunday to be able to spend some time with them and it’s been great.

Coming from a golfing paradise like the Sunshine State, how is your golf game?
Impeccable (laughs). Actually my dad is an avid golfer and he introduced me to the sport when I was 17. He goes every weekend and we went to a few driving ranges together when I was younger. I remember he gave me a couple pointers to help correct my swing. I know a few guys on the team can golf and I’m sure they’ll be competing for bragging rights at the Alouettes’ annual golf tournament this week.
Your first TD of the season helped pave the way for the Als’ thrilling come from behind victory against Calgary in Week 2. Did you get any love or did it all go to Jerald Brown and Patrick Lavoie?
Now that I look back on it, I can honestly say that I didn’t get any. (laughs) It all went to Pat and J.B. but sometimes that’s how it goes. Pat is a young player who is doing great things for this team and that play was just one example. It doesn’t matter who gets the love, as long as we’re winning. We support and are happy for one another. That’s how it goes on this team.
You were able to show off your wheels on a 54-yard catch and run against Hamilton. Did any of the guys tease you for not taking it to the house?
They sure did. The same type of play happened to Jamel Richardson last year and we all got on him for it. Now, it seems it’s my turn. I did however look at the film and you can see that I didn’t get caught from behind which makes me feel better. The defender was actually in front of me and took a good angle of pursuit to get me down. So now J-Rich and I are even.
Heading into the bye week, you went over the century mark in receiving yards twice. Tell the truth, have you been lobbying AC for more balls to come your way?
Not really. I only flipped him a few crisp 20 dollar bills before each game specifically telling him to look my way. (laughs) Truthfully, it’s the chemistry that we continue to build during each practice, film session and game. As a result, he feels comfortable and has been looking my way this season. I’m just trying to come down with the ball when my number is called.
Any pregame rituals either the night or the morning before the game?
I collect my thoughts and just keep quiet. I have a nice view from my downtown apartment and I concentrate on making plays way before the game. It also helps that I have a few tunes playing in my earphones to keep relaxed.
What’s the story behind your first down celebration?
I picked it up when I was with the New York Jets in 2010. I spent a lot of time with Santonio Holmes and it was kind of his thing to pick up the ball and let it drop past the first down marker. I just brought that celebration to the CFL. All the receivers in this league have their own little thing specific to them after making a big catch. I actually saw Brandon London do it last game against Winnipeg and I told him that the move is copy-written!
