MONTREAL – Seeing the Alouettes and Argonauts battling it out for the top spot in the CFL East Division has helped rekindle the rivalry between these two longtime foes. While having a head coach and roster made up of many Alouettes expatriates has also helped fan the flames, there’s no denying the reborn intensity of this historic rivalry. So we got to thinking: when was the last time the Als and Argos were the toast of the CFL East?
It ends up that not since 2006 have tensions at opposite ends of the 401 been so high. That year, the Alouettes and Argonauts battled neck and neck right down to the wire with the teams reaching the end of the regular season knotted with identical 10-8 records. The Als got the nod and earned the division crown on the strength of their record against Toronto that year.
These clubs might be on a similar collision course in 2012. If the Argos escape Montreal with a win on Sunday (TICKETS | PRINTABLE LINE-UP CARD), they would mirror the Alouettes at 7-5, but hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their season-series record. That might be easier said than done for Ricky Ray and Co., however. With the Argonauts coming off a 23-20 victory over the Alouettes on July 27, they will be looking to notch consecutive wins over the Als for the first time since 2007. The time before that was 1997.
