When the October 14 match-up between the Alouettes and Argonauts was chosen as the date for the team’s annual Fan Train game back in the spring, we thought it might rekindle a rivalry that’s been mostly dormant lately between the two longtime divisional foes. With the game now less than a week away, it’s clear it’s become far more than that.
With the Als holding a slim two point lead over the Argos, a win on Sunday combined with a Tiger-Cats loss would not only secure a home-field playoff game for the Alouettes, but also all but tie up the East for Marc Trestman’s squad, extending Montreal’s point cushion to four plus the tiebreaker, with three games to play.
As for the fans’ role in the Fan Train? Try on these results for size: Since 2003, the Alouettes boast a 8-1 record in Fan Train games, with last year’s loss in Hamilton snapping the team’s eight-game winning streak.
This year marks the most pivotal Fan Train confrontation since 2006’s Week 18 showdown. That year, the Alouettes (9-8) also travelled to Toronto (10-7) with first place on the line. The result? The Als left Hogtown with a 24-20 victory, winning the division and the accompanying first-round playoff bye with it by virtue of the tiebreaker.

As part of the CFL’s 2012 PINK program, which helps benefit women’s cancer research, this year’s Fan Train will have a PINK theme. The Alouettes and VIA Rail Canada have partnered with Virgin Radio’s Shave to Save and the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation to help raise awareness for this important cause. In addition to the Alouettes players wearing pink gear, like tape and gloves on the field, fullbacks Patrick Lavoie and Martin Bédard will also have their heads shaved on the trip back. By making a small donation to the cause, fans will receive a gift and get the chance to witness the head shaving in person. All passengers will receive a special pink rally towel designed to augment awareness inside the Rogers Centre.
