Hitting the ice

LAC MÉGANTIC – The Alouettes announced on Tuesday that the club will be taking part in a charity hockey game at the Centre Sportif Mégantic in the Lac Mégantic region on Saturday, April 5.

“The Alouettes were there to help us from the beginning following the July 6 disaster,” explained event organizer and head coach of the local Béliers junior football team, Yannick Thibault. “After the Alouettes raised over $20,000 for the Lac Mégantic community at a home game last year, I stayed in contact with the organization over the months that followed and am pleased to see this second initiative come together.”

Fifteen current and former Alouettes players will make up the Alouettes celebrity squad, including Magog-native Nicolas Boulay who was on-hand for Tuesday’s announcement, Éric Deslauriers, Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, Marc-Olivier Brouillette, André Bolduc, Bruno Heppell, Steve Charbonneau, and Danny Desriveaux. Members of the Alouettes’ front office will also see ice time, including president Mark Weightman, in addition to team mascot Touché and a number of cheerleaders.

Representing the home side will be a Béliers team comprised of former players from the local Polyvalente Montignac football program, including Patrick Gaignard, Michaël Lavallière, Patrick Vallerand, Luc Vallerand, Patrick Caron, Guy Therrien, Bernard Fillion, Vincent Ménard, Alexandre Parent, Bryan Counter, Jean-Philippe Ménard, Gilbert Guay, Antoine Dostie, Guillaume Hallée and David Morin. François Gilbert and Jean-Philippe Parent will be the goaltenders.

Kicking off at 5:30 p.m. with an autograph session in the lobby of the Centre Sportif Mégantic, the puck will drop following on-ice warm-ups at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Alouettes charity hockey game are on-sale now for $5.00 at the Centre Sportif Mégantic, as well as at the local Jean Coutu pharmacy, Dépanneur Ultra Esso, and via players who are currently part of the Béliers football program.

All proceeds from the event will be split between the Béliers program and the Fonds Avenir Lac-Mégantic relief fund.
