TC14: Day 8 Report

MontrealAlouettes.com

LENNOXVILLE – It almost seems unfair to a defence that led the league in most categories a year ago that the spotlight at training camp so far has been on the offence. But while fans may always save their reactions for a beautiful catch over a broken-up pass, make no mistake about it, the Alouettes defence is once again having a strong training camp.

Sunday, defensive players were quickly getting to the quarterback — hitting the breaks before making contact — in plays which would have normally resulted in a sack in a game situation.

“We coach our guys to get to the quarterback, and even when they accomplish that, we expect our guys to keep covering and continue their pursuit of the ball,” explained Alouettes defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Noel Thorpe. “But during practice we let the offence finish the play so they can work on their efficiency as well.”

For the past few days now, receivers and defensive backs have been exchanging unkind words as the intensity keeps climbing after more than a week of going head-to-head on a daily basis. Both the offence and defence will get to finally face a different foe on June 14 however, when the Alouettes visit the Tiger-Cats for their first pre-season contest of the year.

Quick hits

Receiver S.J. Green kicked off the morning session with a spectacular catch in the end zone… Chad Johnson scored two touchdows on Sunday, including one on an impressive grab in the corner of the end zone that even had the defence clapping… The longest play of the day belonged to receiver Duron Carter who caught a 75-yard pass from Tanner Marsh to reach the end zone.

Before hitting the field, the Alouettes added offensive lineman Elliott Mealer (Michigan) to the roster, releasing cornerback Laron Scott.
