MONTREAL – Alouettes defensive end John Bowman has been named the CFL’s Defensive Player of the Week following an impressive outing in last Friday’s regular season home-opener against the B.C. Lions at McGill Stadium.

HIGHLIGHTS: #BCvsMTL »

Bowman, a 9-year CFL veteran, was brilliant en route to recording four quarterback sacks against Kevin Glenn, only one away from tying the team record for most sacks in a single game shared by Elfrid Payton and Duane Butler, who set the marks in 1999 and 2003 respectively. Bowman completed the night with five defensive tackles.

The 32-year-old Brooklyn native set the tone early in the game with a sack during B.C.’s first possession, inspiring an almost flawless defensive effort from his entire unit. The all-star defensive end tied his career-best performance against the Lions, leading the Alouettes to their first win of the season, 24-9. Previously, he also recorded four sacks against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a July 22, 2010 contest.

Bowman is the team’s all-time sacks leader (75) ahead of former teammate and now Defensive Quality Control Coach, Anwar Stewart. Bowman has now tallied ten defensive tackles, including four quarterback sacks in two games since the start of the regular season, and was also voted the Alouettes Player of the Game on Friday by fans via the team’s official mobile app.
