MONTREAL – Alouettes linebacker Bear Woods and kick returner James Rodgers were respectively named defensive player of the week and special teams player of the week in the CFL on Monday.
Bear Woods – Defensive Player of the Week
The 27-year old international linebacker’s performance in his team’s 38-31 victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this past Sunday was one that won’t be soon forgotten. Woods recorded a career-high ten defensive tackles, including two sacks much to the delight of the roaring faithful at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. He was a key contributor in the Alouettes defence, which generated five turnovers that proved to be crucial in securing the outcome of the game and the Alouettes subsequently moving into a first-place tie with the Toronto Argonauts for first place in the CFL’s East Division. Over his past two games, Woods has amassed 16 tackles and sacked opposing quarterbacks three times.
James Rodgers – Special Teams Player of the Week
In only his second career CFL game, James Rodgers has earned league-wide recognition for his play on special teams. Rodgers, 25, returned a Tiger-Cats punt 80 yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter on Sunday against Hamilton. Following this, the Alouettes took the lead for good and never looked back while Rodgers completed the contest with four punt returns totalling 100 yards and two kick returns totalling 45 yards. Rodgers, a former Oregon Beaver, recorded his first career touchdown the previous week on a 17-yard run against the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
